Asia Cup: KL Rahul And Shreyas Iyer Unlikely To Be Fit In Time
KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer will in all likelihood not be picked for this edition of the Asia Cup, as per Cricbuzz. The squad will be announced this week in all probability. BCCI sources have revealed that they have not regained enough fitness to be considered for the tournament that will be held from August 30 to September 17.
In spite of the fact that they both provide fitness updates on social media, BCCI insiders indicate that it's too early for them to be put back in international cricket. Nonetheless, they are still in contention for spots in the World Cup squad if they recover completely. In fact, their comeback may take place in the ODIs vs Australia towards the end of September.
Their absence also means that a majority of the players who played the ODIs vs West Indies will be there for the Asia Cup. But we will see Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami and comeback man Jasprit Bumrah back in the side.
Prasidh Krishna is also on his way back after injury but he might just miss out. Ishan Kishan is all set for the Asia Cup and even is Rahul is fit, may be considered as a keeper-batter for the World Cup as well.
If Ishan plays, the management will need to stabilise the opening slots since Rohit Sharma will also come back into the side. There is a possibility that Ishan and Rohit may open while Shubman Gill may move down to the middle order. The final team will be decided during the Asia Cup preparatory camp which will be in Bengaluru from August 24 to 29. India's opening Asia Cup game is vs Pakistan on September 2.
Meanwhile, India's premier pacer Bumrah will be leading the Men in Blue in the T20I series vs Ireland, as per Cricbuzz. The opening game is on August 18.
This is also Bumrah's comeback to the national side after nearly 11 months. The 29-year-old was out of action due to injury and had also required surgery. Only recently, after months of rehabilitation at the NCA, Bumrah was cleared to play and was training in Mumbai as a result.
The squad has some fresh faces. IPL heroes like Rinku Singh and Jitesh Sharma received calls.
Also, Prasidh Krishna makes a return from injury. India will play 3 T20Is vs Ireland and this series comes between the current West Indies tour that ends on August 13 and the Asia Cup that starts on August 30. It will end on August 23.
Tilak Varma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Arshdeep Singh, Sanju Samson, Ravi Bishnoi, Mukesh Kumar and Avesh Khan are the only ones from the T20I squad in West Indies who are in the squad vs Ireland.
The promising development is that Bumrah was bowling as many as 7 overs daily at the NCA, which is good news for fans with the ODI World Cup just a little over 2 months away. The schedule is officially out.
Bumrah went under the knife for back surgery due to a constant niggle in New Zealand earlier in March and since then the 29-year-old is on the road to recovery.
